Firearms Import
As of January 1, 2001, the Government of Canada has introduced new laws governing the possession of firearms and aquisition of ammunition within Canada.
For the purposes of Canadian law, the three classes of firearms are:
 Non-restricted (most ordinary rifles and shotguns);
 Restricted (mainly handguns); and
 Prohibited (full automatics, converted automatics, handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm (approx. 4") or less, and .25 or .32 calibre handguns among others).
******You may not bring a prohibited firearm or replica firearm into Canada******
To bring a non-restricted firearm into Canada:
- You must be at least 18 years old. (Call for options for minors who use firearms.)
- You must declare your firearms at your first point of entry.
- You must fill out a "Non-Resident Firearms Declaration Form" in triplicate and present it to the customs officials at the border. Although the forms can be filled out ahead of time, DO NOT SIGN THE FORMS UNTIL YOU ARE IN FRONT OF THE CUSTOMS OFFICIALS. This confirmed declaration will serve as a temporary firearms license and registration certificate for up to 60 days.
- A Non-Resident Firearm Declaration will cost $50 CAD. It can be renewed any number of times within a 12-month period at no extra cost. Payment is made to Customs at the border; they will accept cash and most credit cards.
ONE FINAL NOTE :
It is an airline requirement that your sporting arms be transported in a locked gun case. Also, if you chose to bring your own ammunition, you are restricted to a MAXIMUM of 11 POUNDS per hunter. This is also an airline regulation. We would highly recommend that you contact your airline prior to your departure for final clarification on what is acceptable to bring with you on the plane.
