The Habitat
Alberta Flyway Waterfowl Outfitters Ltd operates in east central Alberta, in an area used predominantly for agriculture. It is one of the most scenic areas in Alberta combining aspen parklands with gradual rolling hills.
The area has a large number of lakes and slow flowing river systems creating ideal nesting grounds for dozens of species of waterfowl. As well, the area has a very low human population density creating low hunting competition. This coupled with the abundance of pea and cereal grain fields, has created some the most exciting and ideal waterfowl hunting of the central flyway. As a result, the area is one of the top three birding sites in Alberta, and boasts one of the highest densities of Greater Canada geese. With such ideal nesting grounds, birdgame will remain from late August until late November.
The abundance of marshy lakes and slow moving rivers found in the area helps to create an excellent staging area for migrating waterfowl, as these conditions encourage large numbers of birds to congregate until the water eventually freezes and the birds continue on their migratory path to the southern United States.
